| Antiga formação da banda |
A banda foi fundada na Noruega em 1996 e sua música é geralmente classificada como metal gótico com influências do doom metal. Em seus primeiros lançamentos a banda tinha um som baseado em riffs do black metal com teclado dominante, com bastante foco nos vocais femininos "teatrais" e instrumentos musicais tipicamente eruditos como o órgão de tubos, a flauta e o violino. A banda também faz uso extenso do vocal gutural de Morten Veland. Em álbuns posteriores, a banda procurou balancear mais o estilo vocal e adotar uma postura mais progressiva em seu som.

Tristania em sua formação antiga é uma das minhas bandas favoritas e me desculpem os fãs de Mariangela Demurtas a atual vocalista da banda, mas pra mim Vibeke Stene será sempre a expressão e a voz máxima do Tristania.
